UWA Cruises by Paine, Extends Win Streak to Six

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama extended its winning streak to six games by cruising by Paine College, 85-61, in men's basketball Tuesday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

West Alabama led from tap to buzzer, improving to 6-2. Paine College dropped to 1-8.

The Tigers led by as many as 33 points early in the second half while shooting 51 percent from the floor (30-of-58) and 79 percent from the line (19-of-24). UWA limited Paine to just 36 percent from the floor (21-o-58) and both teams turned the ball over just 12 times.

The Tigers and Lions played to a 38-38 draw in the second half, but West Alabama was never really threatened.

"When you get a big lead, it is hard to stay on the edge and focused sometimes," UWA head coach Allen Sharpe said. "I know those are the hardest games to coach.

"It was tie to play after having a week off," Sharpe said. "We did a much better job of taking care of the basketball tonight after a couple of sloppy efforts in that area."

West Alabama dominated inside, with three Tiger post players combining for 57 points as UWA outscored the Lions 34-14 in the paint.

Ricky Dunnaway scored a UWA career-high 22 points to lead Tiger scoring, followed by Charles Tripp with 19 and DeAndre Harper with 16. The trio combined to make 22-of-31 field goal attempts. Harper and Tripp's totals were both season highs.

"All the big guys shot a good percentage," Sharpe said. "We had a chance to play Ricky and Tripp together some tonight and that is something we have been looking to get a chance to do."

West Alabama also controlled the boards, outrebounding the Lions 43-28. LaJuan Hardy, Harper, Dunnaway and Tripp all collected six rebounds to lead the Tigers. Dunnaway blocked a pair of shots for good measure.

Charles Moore scored 19 points to lead Paine, followed by Cameron Gaines with 16. Ronzell Evans grabbed five rebounds.

West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference play Saturday when Shorter (2-4) visits Pruitt Hall Gym. Paine College returns to Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Spring Hill (3-4) Saturday.
