Wolves Come from Behind for Win at UWA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Four players scored in double figures as West Georgia came from behind to defeat West Alabama, 59-56, in Gulf South Conference women's basketball Monday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The win improved West Georgia to 5-3 overall, 2-2 in league play. West Alabama dipped to 5-6 and 2-2 while losing for the 10th time in the last 11 meetings against the Wolves. The Tigers also had a modest three-game win streak snapped.

"We knew it would be a close basketball game," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "It is every time we play West Georgia.

"The third quarter decided the game," Cram said. "We let one get away from us. We found a way to lose instead of finding a way to win."

West Alabama led 28-27 at the half, but the first 20 minutes were a story of two different runs. The Tigers jumped out to an 11-0 lead by the 5:06 mark of the first quarter, but West Georgia put together a 21-11 run over the next 10 minutes and briefly claimed the lead at 27-26 with 47 seconds left in the half.

West Georgia outscored the Tigers 17-6 in the third period, including a 17-2 run at one point, to take a 44-34 lead at the end of the quarter. West Alabama was scoreless for 5:02 in the third period as UWG built its 10-point lead.

After trailing by 10 points with 1:10 left in the third period, West Alabama rallied in the fourth period, cutting the Wolves lead to 55-52 on a Chloe Culpepper putback with 1:38 to play. The Tigers needed just 48 seconds for the 6-0 run that ended with her basket.

West Alabama could get no closer than two points the rest of the way, while the Wolves stretched the lead to 58-53 on free throws by Aysha Harris and Ashley Lee. McKenzie Parker drained a three-pointer for UWA to narrow the UWG advantage to 58-56 with 1.3 seconds left. A free throw from Aysha Harris accounted for the final margin.

A'Kia Harris and Terrianna Cave scored 12 points each to lead West Georgia. Aysha Harris and Edley Drawhorn chipped in 11 apiece.  Five Wolves collected four rebounds each and UWG converted 19 Tiger turnovers into 27 points.

Culpepper was a rebound shy of a double-double, leading all scorers with 18 points. Six of her nine rebounds came on the offensive boards. Ten Tigers scored, but no one joined Culpepper in double figures. She converted 8-of-12 from the floor and had three steals.

"Thankfully Chloe showed up tonight. We couldn't ask much more of her," Cram said. "They started doubling and tripling down on the block, but nobody answered from the perimeter."
West Alabama made just 4-of-22 from three-point range, while UWG was 6-of-18 from long range and shot 49 percent (24-49) from the field.

West Alabama has 18 days off before returning to action Jan. 5 at Valdosta State. West Georgia is host to Clark Atlanta Wednesday.
