MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The West Alabama Tigers ended the trip to the Gulf South Conference Open Weekend Festival on a positive note winning the second game of today's two contests to earn their first conference victory Sunday afternoon in softball action. UWA lost to the West Georgia Wolves, 5-3, and then responded with a 5-1 victory over the Shorter Hawks.

UWA improves to 4-10 on the season and 1-2 in the GSC.

West Georgia 5, West Alabama 3

The Tigers held a 2-0 lead after two and a half innings, but the Wolves scored three in the bottom of the third and then two in the bottom of the fifth to provide the scoring needed for the win. UWA scored the lone run in the fourth inning.

West Alabama collected six hits, including a two RBI double by Allison Craft, an RBI double by Nicole Buccieri, and a double by Chrissy Tubbs. Averi Pender also collected a hit for the Tigers. Along with the double, Buccieri also had two other hits.

Right-handed junior Nora Keehn suffered the loss for the Tigers, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing two runs on three hits. Andrea Edmonds pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Freshman Kamree Lay pitched one inning, allowing no runs on no hits. Carleigh Mills pitched one inning and allowed no runs on no hits.

Combined, the West Alabama pitchers allowed four earned runs, seven hits, and two walks.

West Alabama 5, Shorter 1

Junior Carleigh Mills pitched a complete game, allowing one run on four hits. The only run scored by Shorter was earned.

The Tiger offense struck for nine hits coming from seven different players. Freshman Chrissy Tubbs collected three hits and one RBI. Kendall Johnson had one hit and two RBI. Senior left-fielder Savannah Smathers hit a double and had one RBI. Haylie Best also collected an RBI.

West Alabama was able to capitalize on two Shorter errors while committing none of their own.

UWA is back in action on Friday at 1 p.m. against Blue Mountain College in Tupelo, Miss. The Tigers will also face GSC opponent Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. in the conference weekend series of the season.
