UWA Softball Overcomes Late Lee Rally to Earn Doubleheader Split

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – After dropping the first game, the West Alabama Tigers had to overcome emotions to force a split in a Gulf South Conference Softball doubleheader with the Lee Lady Flames Friday night.

UWA now sits at 5-11 overall and 2-3 in the GSC. Lee moves to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

"We didn't execute some things that cost us some runs early, but I love to see the never say die attitude," said Head coach Carie Dever-Boaz.

Lee won the first contest 6-2 while the Tigers responded with a 5-4 win in game two.

In the first game, Lee scored two runs in both the bottom of the first and fourth innings and one each in the third and sixth. The Tigers put together a mini-rally in the top of the sixth with two runs, but a homerun in the bottom of the same inning by the Flames' Stevie Baird provided the winning 6-2 margin. Ashley Smart had the lone UWA RBI in game one.

"We just didn't come ready to compete," said Dever-Boaz. "They come out flat and (Lee) came out ready to go. It's like I told them in between games. You can't choose when you're ready to show up and play. It's a competition and every play and every at-bat you have to be ready."

The Tigers scored two runs to start the second game with Kendall Johnson and Ashley Smart coming around to score. Kylie Martin brought in three RBIs in the victory including the winning run in the top of the seventh. Taylor Moran hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game before UWA put it away with the Martin RBI that scored Johnson for a second time in the game.

"Kylie Martin is playing like a senior," said Dever-Boaz after Martin's big performance. "She's really a fun kid to coach. She's just hungry and has been sitting and waiting on her opportunity and I gave it to her today. She just took it and ran with it. She's playing with a passion and competing. That's all I can ask out of any of them, especially a freshman."

Moran went 4 for 6 on the day for Lee with 5 RBIs combined.

Andrea Edmonds didn't factor in the decision but pitched a gem of a game in the second contest going 5.1 innings with three strikeouts and just three hits allowed. The junior pitcher was struck by a hit from Abby McKinney that forced her out of the game.

"Obviously, you're always concerned when a pitcher gets hit like that, but I think after that big ball that Carleigh had hit off of her they weren't going to lose that game," said Dever-Boaz.

Carleigh Mills (3-5) earned the decision in both games with .2 innings pitched. Nora Keehn logged 3.2 innings and struck out four batters while allowing seven hits and three earned runs.

Kamree Lay earned the game two save coming in the game in the bottom of the seventh and striking out two batters. The freshman pitched 3.1 innings total on the day and struck out seven batters and gave up one hit.

Even with the win, the Tigers still have room to improve.

"Consistency. As a coach, I want to know when I'm writing a lineup I know who and what I'm going to get," said Dever-Boaz. "Somebody's lights out one day and bomb the next. It's really hard to find some consistency in a line up. I just want them to come out and compete every at-bat."

West Alabama returns to action tomorrow in the rubber match against the Lee Lady Flames. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. eastern and 12 p.m. central. Links to live stats, video and UWA produced audio are available on uwaathletics.com.
