Tigers split double header in Gulf Shores to open season

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The West Alabama Softball team took to the road to open the 2018 season at the DII Gulf Shores Softball Invitational. The three-day tournament features teams from the southeastern area of the country.

On the first day, UWA split a pair of early afternoon games moving the overall record to 1-1.

UWA 6, Lenoir-Rhyne 2

UWA defeated the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears, 6-2 in their opening game of the 2018 season and first game of the Gulf Shores Invitational.

Andrea Edmonds started in the circle for the Tigers, striking out four and allowing three hits through her four innings of work. Nora Keehn came in relief, striking out one and allowing three hits in her two innings of work. Carleigh Mills closed out the game, giving up two runs on two hits and striking out one.

Offensive support came from all aspects of the West Alabama lineup as the Tigers racked up nine hits from six different hitters. UWA scored twice in the second inning, twice in the fifth inning, and twice more in the seventh inning to secure the win.

Senior Audrey Diekmann led the offense with three hits, including two doubles and two RBI. Abby McKee walked and had a triple. Kierra Hague had two hits and one RBI and Savannah Smathers hit a sacrifice fly.

West Alabama allowed one error while Lenoir-Rhyne allowed two.

The Tigers were patient at the plate, walking four times and only striking out once. Of the six runs scored for UWA, four were earned and two were unearned, coming off of the two errors conceived by Lenoir-Rhyne.

Eckerd College 5, UWA 4

After a strong start scoring three runs in the first inning, West Alabama dropped game two of the Gulf Shores Tournament against the Eckerd College Tritons, 5-4 in eight innings.

UWA was unable to break the tie in the bottom of the seventh after allowing the tying run to score in the seventh inning. Eckerd scored one in the top of the eighth and the Tigers were unable to answer back in their half of the inning.

Newcomer Kamree Lay started in the circle for the Tigers, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Keehn made her second appearance of the day, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing one run on four hits. Edmonds (1-1) returned as well and took the loss, allowing one run on one hit in 1.0 innings pitched.

Kierra Hague, Chrissy Tubbs, Savannah Smathers, and Hayes Fulford all tallied an RBI each during the game.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday against Rollins College at 9 a.m. and then against Tuskegee University at 11 a.m.
