UNA Downs UWA, 102-75, to Close Regular Season

FLORENCE, Ala. – North Alabama stormed out to a 33-point lead in the first half and never looked back on the way to a 102-75 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over West Alabama Thursday at Flowers Hall.

The game was the regular season finale for both teams, with North Alabama improving to 24-3 overall, 17-3 in GSC play. West Alabama is 13-14 and 10-10.

UNA and UWA will meet again Tuesday at Flowers Hall in the quarterfinals of the 2018 GSC Tournament. The Lions are the No. 2 seed and the Tigers No. 7.

North Alabama led 48-15 at the half, shooting 51 percent from the floor while limiting West Alabama to just three field goals (3-of-21), but West Alabama rebounded to outscore the Lions 60-54 in the second half, but it was too little, too late.

West Alabama outrebounded UNA 49-44, but the Lions outscored the Tigers 46-34 in the paint and 19-9 on second-chance points.

"We played hard in the second half, but UNA is a good ball club," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We scored a lot of points in the second half but did absolutely nothing in the first. The last three or four games we have not been able to put four quarters together."

Emma Wallen scored 31 points for UNA to lead all scorers and Michaela DeKilder had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Brittany Panetti chipped in 14 points and Darby Madden 12 for the Lions. Ansley Eubank dished out 11 assists.

Kierra Groce led West Alabama scoring with 16 points, all in the second half. Chloe Culpepper added 15 points and collected eight rebounds, while Tazsa Garrett-Hammett notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, getting of each in the second half. Peyton Parker added 13 points and J'Nyiah Daniels 10 for UWA.

"If we are content just making the GSC Tournament we will have a long row to hoe when we come back up here Tuesday," Cram said. "I hope that isn't the case."
