Jumpei Akanuma No Hits West Alabama

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Lee right-hander Jumpei Akanuma threw a no-hitter as the Flames scored a 10-0 victory over West Alabama Saturday at Olympic Park in Gulf South Conference baseball.

Akanuma faced just two batters over the minimum as Lee mercy-ruled the Tigers to take two of three games in the series. West Alabama's two base runners were courtesy of throwing errors by Lee infielders. The Tigers failed to have a runner reach second base.

Akanuma's feat marked just the second time West Alabama has been no hit in the history of the program. Valdosta State's Andy Boutwell recorded the only other no-hitter against the Tigers in 1999.

West Alabama is off to a 3-10 start, its worst since opening 3-9 in 2013. The Tigers are 1-2 n GSC play. Lee improved to 6-9 and 2-1.

Akanuma (2-1) struck out 11 and didn't walk a batter while throwing just 76 pitches. West Alabama starter Colton Morgan (0-1) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings.

Lee jumped to a 3-1 lead after two innings and stretched the advantage to 5-0 after six innings before putting the game away with a five-run seventh inning.

Jordan Howard and Miguel Pimentel had three hits each for the Flames. Spencer Mossburg chipped in two more hits. Chase Gadau drove in three runs and Howard two.

West Alabama is host to Valdosta State in a three-game conference series beginning with a doubleheader Saturday at Tartt Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. Lee is host to North Alabama on Saturday and Sunday for a three-game set.
