LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama roared back from a 20-point deficit to defeat Delta State, 63-60, in Gulf South Conference women's basketball Thursday at Pruitt Hall Gym.
The victory improves West Alabama to 12-11 overall, 9-7 in the GSC. Delta State is 9-13 and 7-9.
Not only did West Alabama erase the 20-point deficit, but the Tigers also put together a 13-0 run in the last 41 seconds of the game. Delta State had a 10-point lead with just under a minute left to play.
The Tigers led for just 1:26 of the game but kept Delta State from making a field goal for the last 3:14 of the game to capture the win.
"Just phenomenal," UWA head coach
Rusty Cram said. "The Good Lord looked down and smiled on us tonight.
"We were two different teams in the first and second halves," Cram said. "To come back from 10 down with a minute left and no timeouts…my hat is off to our kids."
West Alabama trailed 32-16 at the half after scoring just three points in the second quarter. The Tigers turned the trick on the Lady Statesmen in the fourth period, however. West Alabama outscored DSU 30-9 over the last 10 minutes of the game.
"This was not our best game, but for us to finish the way we did against one of the top women's basketball programs in Division II over the years is big," Cram said. "I can't tell you how valuable this will be for us down the stretch."
Chloe Culpepper led West Alabama scorers with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Kim Parrish chipped in 13 and
Peyton Parker 10. West Alabama outrebounded DSU, 42-37, and the two teams combined for 48 turnovers.
Takisha Jordan scored 19 points to lead Delta State. Alondrea Rush chipped in 15 points and Raven Johnson collected a game-high 11 rebounds for the Lady Statesmen.
West Alabama is host to Mississippi College Saturday at 2 p.m. Delta State stays om he road at Montevallo Saturday.
