Tigers Claim Victory in Series Finale against AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The West Alabama Tigers used a two-run second inning to get ahead and then a solo homer from a freshman to grab a 3-2 victory in Gulf South Conference softball action against the Auburn-Montgomery Warhawks Saturday afternoon.
 
AUM (12-6, 7-5) wasted no time on offense, being aggressive early and scoring a run on an RBI single from Jaycie Walker to score Parker Pinholster to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
 
UWA (7-18, 3-9) finally got on the board in the top of the fifth when Olivia Dunlap, pinch running for Savannah Smathers who reached on a double, scored on a passed ball. Bree Thompson followed that with an RBI single to centerfield to score Kierra Hague, pinch running for Alli Craft, to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
 
West Alabama added to the lead in the top of the sixth when Nicole Buccieri smashed her first collegiate homer to left field to go up 3-1.
 
AUM responded in the bottom of the inning when Amy Persinger singled in Kalee Sparks to close the gap to 3-2.
 
As a team, UWA accumulated five hits with Auburn-Montgomery collecting six hits.
 
Kamree Lay (2-1) got the start for the Tigers and went 4.0 innings with three strikeouts, four hits allowed and one earned run. Andrea Edmonds earned her second save of the season going the final three innings with two strikeouts, two hits, and an earned run allowed.
 
Natalie Johnsey (2-3) started for the Warhawks and pitched 4.0 innings with three hits surrendered and two strikeouts before being relieved by Chanel Newcomer who went 2.0 innings with two hits and a run given up. Johnsey also came back for relief duty in the seventh.
 
UWA returns to action next weekend in Livingston hosting Delta State for a doubleheader apart of the Super Tiger Day Spring Preview on the UWA campus. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on uwaathletics.com
