Tigers Earn GSC Doubleheader Sweep over CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The bats were working early and all day for the West Alabama Tigers who earned a Gulf South Conference Softball doubleheader sweep over the Christian Brothers Lady Bucs Saturday after noon at Bland Field.
 
UWA improved 11-19 overall and 7-10 in the conference after claim a fifth victory in six games. CBU falls to 7-24 on the season and 1-16 in the GSC.
 
Nicole Buccieri started the party early with a single to left field to bring around Ashley Smart. Chelsea Lobitos followed that with a single to center field to plate Kendall Johnson and Buccieri, who then scored on an RBI single from Savannah Smathers to put UWA up 4-0 after half inning of work.
 
However, CBU responded using Tiger miscues to score Amber Johnson and Olivia Parcels. Sierra Anderson smashed a solo homer over left field to close the gap to 4-3 in favor of UWA.
 
Smathers earned another RBI in the second, drawing a walk to bring in Johnson to give West Alabama a 5-3 lead.
 
In the sixth, UWA's Johnson used a double to bring in Abby McKee and then Buccieri doubled in Johnson to put the Tigers up 7-3.
 
Parsels homered to left field in the bottom of the inning to cut the score to 7-4 game one final
 
Chrissy Tubbs started the action in game two with a hit to left field with two outs to bring in Buccieri.
 
The Lady Bucs tied it at 1-1 when Amber Johnson scored on an error.
 
CBU claimed its first lead of the day off a home run by Ashlyn Hinton over left field to make it 2-1.
 
Buccieri didn't let it last long as she knocked a line shot into left field to bring in Olivia Dunlap. Smathers singled in Kendall Johnson, Allison Craft brought in Smathers, and Haylie Best doubled in Kylie Martin and Craft to put the Tigers back on top 6-2 in the third.
 
McKee scored in the fourth on an outfield error which was followed by a Tubbs single to bring in Shay Shepherd and Smart to put the Tigers up 9-2.
 
Then in the fifth, Smart knocked in McKee on a single and then Kendall Johnson smashed her first homer of her collegiate career to put the Tigers up by the winning 12-2 margain.
 
Andrea Edmonds started the game and went two innings before being relieved by Kamree Lay (3-1) who pitched four innings and earned the win in game one with four strikeouts and only one hit surrendered. Carleigh Mills earned her first save of the season with three straight strike outs. Mills started the second game and went 1.1 innings before being relieved by Nora Keehn (2-2) who went 3.2 innings, gave up only two hits and struck out three batters.
 
Jenna Cotter (3-8) was the pitcher of record for both games after surrendering four earned runs and five hits in five innings of work in game one and then allowing five earned runs on four hits and a walk. Sierra Anderson pitched two innings in relief and gave up three earned runs in the first game and started the second game and allowed nine hits and seven earned runs.
 
UWA will look to sweep the series against CBU tomorrow with first pitch set for 1 p.m. at Bland Field.
