Tigers Rally in Sixth to Claim Series over Delta State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama Tigers defeated the Delta State University Statesmen 12-8 to secure the Gulf South Conference Softball series victory. UWA moves to 9-19 overall and 5-10 in the GSC.

After multiple rain delays moving the start time from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the Tigers came out on top after a seven run sixth inning. Nicole Buccieri started the rally with a two-run homerun to tie the game.

The teams combined for 26 hits and eight errors, five belonging to DSU. Four of the 15 allowed hits by the UWA pitchers were allowed by Andrea Edmonds and the other 11 from Nora Keehn.

Keehn gets the victory after relieving Edmonds in the first inning. Keehn moves to 1-2 on the season.

Ashley Smart collected a team-leading three hits while Kendall Johnson and Buccieri each collected two, including the game-tying homerun for Buccieri.

"It's bigger than just them when they're up to bat; it's about who they're playing for," Head Coach Carie Dever-Boaz said. "We became a team this weekend."

A focus for the team leading up to this series was the mental approach and coming together as a team.

"When we went down by four runs, any other time this season, they would've thrown in the towel," Dever-Boaz said. "We came back, and one mistake didn't turn into two to three to four."

The Tigers will be back in action on March 24-25 against Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn. before returning home the next weekend to host North Alabama.

"We have nothing to lose and everything to gain," Dever-Boaz said.

Delta State falls to 13-16 overall and 6-9 in the conference.
