UWA Softball Sweeps Christian Brothers with 5-1 Win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The West Alabama Tigers took care of business earning their first Gulf South Conference Softball series sweep of the season with a 5-1 win over the Christian Brothers Lady Bucs Sunday afternoon at Bland Field.
 
UWA, winners of four straight and six of last seven, now sit at 12-19 overall and 8-10 in the GSC. CBU is now 7-25 and 1-17 in the conference.
 
Ashley Smart knocked in the first run on the day with a single to left field to drive in Allison Craft. Kendall Johnson followed that with a double to left field to bring in Abby McKee to give UWA a 2-0 lead in the second.
 
Nicole Buccieri broke a scoring silence in the fifth with a solo shot over right centerfield. Two outs later Bree Thompson brought in Chrissy Tubbs on a double down the left field line. Kylie Martin claimed an RBI in a pinch-hitting spot and brought in Shay Shepherd from second, who was pinch running for Bree Thompson to put the Tigers up 5-0.
 
The Lady Bucs part their first run on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Ashlyn Hinton singled down the third base line and to bring in Abby Ferreira to get to the 5-1 final.
 
 
Kamree Lay (4-1) got the series finale start and went five innings with a strikeout and three hits allowed. Nora Keehn pitched in relief and went two innings with a strikeout and three hits surrendered.
 
Jenna Cotter (3-9) started in the circle for CBU and 4.2 innings with eight hits allowed and two earned runs before being relieved by Sierra Anderson who went 2.1 innings and allowed only two hits and a walk.
 
West Alabama will continue the road trip tomorrow in Jackson, Tenn. with a doubleheader against Lane College. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. Links to live stats and live audio will be available on uwaathletics.com.
