Edmonds Tosses Perfect Game, Tigers Sweep Lane College

JACKSON, Tenn. – Junior pitcher Andrea Edmonds threw her first collegiate perfect game as the West Alabama Tigers swept the Lane College Dragons in a non-conference softball doubleheader Monday afternoon at Muse Park.
 
Edmonds (4-6) struck out seven batters on the way to perfection in seven innings of work.
 
Nicole Buccieri started the offensive action with an RBI double to bring in Kendall Johnson. Two batters later Savannah Smathers brought in Buccieri to put the Tigers up 2-0 after one inning of play.
 
In the second Ashley Smart smacked a double into right field to bring in Kierra Hague and Abby McKee and Buccieri brought in Smart on a single to centerfield make it 5-0 for the final.
 
Averi Pender put the first run on the board in game two with an RBI double to centerfield to being in Allison Craft to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the second.
 
Whitney Knighton put Lane on the board with a hit to left field to drive in Nautica Huddleson to tie the game at 1-1 in the sixth.
 
Then in the seventh, Chrissy Tubbs, who was running for Smart, scored on an error when the centerfielder dropped a deep shot from the bat of Buccieri to make it 2-1 in favor of UWA.
 
Carleigh Mills (4-9) earned the win in game two going six innings with seven strike outs and three hits allowed. Nora Keehn (2) gets the three out save allowing a hit and nabbing a strikeout.
 
After having a masterful weekend, freshman Nicole Buccieri finished a team leading 4 for 6 on the day with three RBIs to push her total to a team leading 20 RBIs.
 
West Alabama returns to the UWA Softball Complex this weekend for a Gulf South Conference series against the nationally ranked North Alabama Lions. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. Friday for a doubleheader. Live stats and live video will be available on uwaathletics.com.
