Tigers Fall in Doubleheader to #10 UNA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama Tigers hang tough with the No. 10 North Alabama Lions in game one but couldn't find the answers in game two and suffered a Gulf South Conference Softball doubleheader sweep Friday at the UWA Softball Complex.

UWA (14-21, 8-12) sees a six-game winning streak go by the wayside while the Lions improve to 30-4 overall and 17-2 in the GSC.

The Tigers jumped to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when senior Bree Thompson blasted a grand slam over left center to bring in Savannah Smathers, Chrissy Tubbs and Nicole Buccieri.

However, that would be all the offense UWA would muster as North Alabama scored two runs in the third and fourth and a run each in the fifth and seventh to get the come from behind, 6-4, victory.

In game two after UNA claimed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, West Alabama responded when Allison Craft doubled in Shay Shepherd and Thompson attained her fifth RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Kendall Johnson.

Nora Keehn (2-3) earned the decision in game one going 3.1 innings with only two hits and one earned run allowed. Kamree Lay started and went 3.2 innings and allowed seven hits and four earned runs.

Andrea Edmonds (4-8) started game two and later made a relief appearance in the same contest with 3.1 total innings pitched while allowing eight hits and six earned runs. Carleigh Mills pitched for a third of an inning and allowed two hits and two runs. Lay made a relief appearance and gave up four hits and two runs in 1.1 innings.

Megan Garst (12-2) went the distance for the Lions in game one and struck out seven batters, allowed six hits and four earned runs. Laken Distefano (12-1) was the game two winner with 5.0 innings pitched, two strikeouts, five walks, two hits and two earned runs.

The Tigers and Lions will meet once more Saturday at 1 p.m. with UWA looking to salvage a win in the series. Live stats and Live video will be available on uwaathletics.com.
