Tigers Drop Twin Bill in Home Opener to VSU

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama Tigers dropped the first two games of the home opening series in the UWA Softball Complex to the Valdosta State Blazers in Gulf South Conference competition.
 
The Tigers now sit at 6-15 overall and 2-6 in the GSC. VSU improves 16-4 and 6-2 in the conference.
 
Nora Keehn started in the circle for the Tigers, but Carleigh Mills came in relief after Keehn walked the first batter. Mills pitched 3.2 innings and allowed four runs on five hits while walking two. She suffers the loss and moves to a record of 3-7 after game one.
 
Freshman Kamree Lay pitched 2.2 innings. Lay allowed three runs on five hits. Keehn returned into the game for .2 innings, striking out one and walking one but allowing no runs or hits.
 
UWA combined for five hits, including a homerun by senior first-baseman Audrey Diekmann. Ashley Smart, Nicole Buccieri, Kierra Hague, and Chrissy Tubbs struck for the other four hits. Tubbs legged out an infield single to drive in the other run for the Tigers. 

Andrea Edmonds pitched a complete game in the second game of the doubleheader. Through her seven innings of work, Edmonds allowed four runs on six hits, while striking out three.
 
The Tigers collected seven hits, including a homerun by catcher Kierra Hague to bring the team within one run. The rally started in the bottom of the seventh inning with the first run for UWA coming from a sacrifice fly by Kendall Johnson. Nicole Buccieri hit a triple with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Tigers could not convert to tie the game.
 
Haylie Best and Chrissy Tubbs collected two hits and an RBI each. Valdosta State committed two errors and West Alabama committed one.
