Mistakes Prove Costly as Softball Drops Doubleheader to AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After a close game one, errors prove to be costly for the West Alabama Tigers in the second game and aided Auburn-Montgomery to a doubleheader sweep at the AUM Softball complex Friday night in Gulf South Conference Action.

Offense was quiet until the bottom of the fourth when Jaycie Walker singled to lead off for the Warhawks (12-5, 7-4). Two batters later Abby Krueger hit a sacrifice-fly to left field, which allowed the pinch runner Jasmine Thompson to score from third and put the home team up for the 1-0 final.

UWA (6-18, 2-9) left 10 runners on base in the game one loss and amassed five hits and benefited from three AUM errors. The Warhawks tallied four hits and left five runners on base.

The Tigers came out aggressive in the second game of the double header using a double to centerfield by Nicole Buccieri to bring in Abby McKee to make it 1-0 in the top of first.

Then in the second, Allison Craft secured an infield RBI to bring in Olivia Dunlap, pinch running for Savannah Smathers who led the inning with a walk to put UWA up 2-0.

In the bottom of the third, a pair of two-out UWA errors allowed Parker Pinholster to put Auburn-Montgomery on the board at 2-1.

However, the home team wasn't done as Gracie Poe hit a single to score Morgan Duschell to tie the game in the fourth followed by a sac bunt by Gracie Harris to score Michaelyn Thompson. Pinholster then singled to right, but fielding errors allowed her to score on the play and get an RBI after knocking in Kendall Tucker. Jaycie Walker ended the scoring with an RBI triple to bring in Hannah Dailey as AUM went up 6-2.

West Alabama showed some life in the sixth when Jenna Goldsmith scored on a single from Ashley Smart to cut the AUM lead to 6-3.

The Warhawks added an insurance run in the sixth with Dailey knocking in Pinholster to go up 7-4

Andrea Edmonds (2-6) received the game one loss, going 4.0 innings with only two hits allowed and one earned run given up and three strikeouts to her credit. Kamree Lay pitched in relief with 2.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed and three strikeouts and made an appearance in game two recording the final out in the sixth. Carleigh Mills (3-8) started the second game and went 3.2 innings with six hits allowed, four earned runs and four strikeouts.
