Tigers split GSC Doubleheader with Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. – The West Alabama Tigers showed grit and bounced back to win the second game of the day's doubleheader and avoid a sweep against the Mississippi College Lady Choctaws in Gulf South Conference softball action Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers fell in the first game of the day 5-2. In the contest UWA (19-28, 11-19) was down 4-0 before cutting the lead to 4-2 when Buccieri reached on a fielder's choice allowing Shay Shepherd to score from third. Then in the next at-bat, Olivia Dunlap stole home while pinch running for Buccieri.

However, MC (26-14, 18-11) used a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to add an insurance run and give the 5-2 final.

Kamree Lay (5-3) got the start in the first contest of the day and 1.1 innings with three earned runs and four hits allowed. Andrea Edmonds went 4.2 innings in relief and struck out three batters with three hits and an earned run allowed.

Hague got the bat going early in game two and used a solo homer, her third of the year, over left field to give UWA a 1-0 advantage in the first.

Then in the second, a fielding error allowed Shepherd to score for the second time on the day and for Chrissy Tubbs to reach safely and move the score to 2-0.

Kendall Johnson singled down the right field line to score Tubbs for her second run of the say to make it 3-0 in the top of the seventh. Savvy base running by the freshman Kylie Martin allowed Jenna Goldsmith to score and put the Tigers up 4-0.

Nora Keehn (5-7) went the distance in game two allowing four hits and relying on a solid defensive effort to force 10 ground outs and nine fly outs against 25 batters faced.

West Alabama returns to action in Livingston next Saturday to close the regular season against Montevallo. The weekend is set to serve as alumni weekend and the team will honor its three senior players.
