UWA Softball drops GSC doubleheader to UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The West Alabama Tigers dropped a Gulf South Conference Softball doubleheader to the University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers Sunday in Charger Park.

UAH took a 4-0 lead in the first, but Savannah Smathers broke the UWA silence her first homer of the year to straight away centerfield to get the Tigers on the board at 4-1 in the second.

Then in the third, Chrissy Tubbs smashed an RBI single down the third base line to score Haylie Best which was followed by Allison Craft driving in Jenna Goldsmith to cut the lead to 4-3.

However, in the bottom of the third the Chargers used a two-run blast to push the lead to 6-3, then added two more in the fourth and another in the fifth to go up for the 9-3 final.

Kamree Lay (5-2) started and went a third of an inning and allowed three hits and three runs before being relieved by Andrea Edmonds who went two innings with four hits and three earned runs allowed with three strikeouts and by Carliegh Mills who struck out four batters and allowed five hits and two earned runs in 3.2 innings.

The bats got going early in game two when Nicole Buccieri knocked in Tubbs followed by an RBI double to right center by Craft to plate Kendall Johnson. Craft later scored on an error after a single from Kierra Hague who scored on a double from Ashley Smart. Bree Thompson then singled in Hague to put the Tigers up 5-0.

Buccieri scored Tubbs again on a second RBI double, this time to right field to put UWA up 6-0 in the second.

However, UAH scored eight straight runs with one a piece in the second and fourth and three runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to take an 8-6 lead.

Nora Keehn (2-6) takes the loss in game two with 4.2 innings pitched, two strike outs, seven hits and five earned runs allowed. Mills pitched an inning and allowed three earned runs. Lay made an appearance and walked two batters in a third of an inning of work.
