Big Eighth Inning Propels DSU to Win over UWA

CLEVELAND, Miss.– Delta State used a four-run eighth inning to notch a come-from-behind 6-2 victory over West Alabama on day one of the 2018 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships Sunday at Harvey Stadium.
 
Ranked 10thin the nation and the top seed in the tournament, the Statesmen improved to 39-8 with the win. West Alabama is 20-26.
 
West Alabama jumped out to a 2-0 lead after five innings over the defending champions. An RBI double from Jonathan Thibodeau drive in Gavin Rogers in the top of the fourth and a single from Ben Dalke chased Joel Murphy in the fifth. The Tigers would manage just two base runners the rest of the way.
 
Delta State tied the game in the sixth when Josh Russell doubled in Nick Morgan, who singled to start the inning. Russell later scored on a wild pitch.
 
The Statemen put the game away in the eighth, using three hits to push across four runs. Jason Popovich had an RBI single, Zack Shannon drove in two with a single and Matthew Majeur's ground out scored a run. Shannon's two runs batted in gives him 84 for the season.
 
Jason Lott (3-1) picked up the win in relief of DSU starter Seth Birdsong. Lott allowed a hit and struck out four in two innings. UWA reliever Layton Dill (1-5) took the loss.
 
West Alabama starter JT Salter struck out 11 over six innings, giving him the new Tiger single season strikeout record with 118. The previous record was 115 by Allan Weedon in 1969. 
 
Murphy had four of West Alabama's seven hits. Russel had three of Delta State's nine hits.
 
West Alabama continues play in the round robin tournament at 1:30 p.m. Monday against Mississippi College. Delta State plays North Alabama at 5 p.m.
 
The West Alabama broadcast will be carried live on ESPN 104.9 immediately following the Jeremy Smith Show from KIA of Meridian. Air time is 2 p.m.
