Montgomery, Phillips Homer, Waites Dominant as Tigers Close Season with Win

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Parlaying a dominate pitching performance from Cole Waites along with home runs from Brock Montgomery and Luke Phillips, West Alabama beat North Alabama, 3-1, Tuesday at the 2018 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships.

West Alabama ends its season 21-27. North Alabama finished its final season in NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference with a 31-20 record. The Lions are transitioning to Division I next year.

"I was really proud of these guys, how we bounced back after a rough tournament to finish the right way," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "Cole Waites controlled both sides of the plate, and in doing so, controlled the baseball game.

"Brock and Luke got the big hits to score all we would need," Rundles said. "It was good to see our seniors have a chance to go out with a win over a long-time rival."

Phillips' two-run homer, his fourth of the season, were the first runs of the game and chased Ben Dalke home after the first of his three hits. Montgomery's blast was a solo shot to lead off the sixth, his third of the year.

North Alabama's only run came on a solo home run by Brandt Holland off Tiger reliever Nick Rathke to start the ninth. It was Holland's eighth of the year.

Waites (4-5) worked eight scoreless innings, scattering three hits, walking two and striking out 10. Waites struck out 28 in 18 innings pitched against UNA this season. Rathke struck out one in the ninth for his fourth save.

UNA starter Lane Wallace (6-7) took the loss, allowing three runs in eight hits. He walked one and struck out six over six innings.

Dalke, Montgomery and Phillips combined for seven of West Alabama's 10 hits. Joel Murphy had a double. Singles from John Watkins and Dominque Dawson ensured every UWA senior in the lineup had a hit in their final game as a Tiger.

Holland had two of North Alabama's four hits.
