Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Tigers Open GSC Play with Loss to MC, 2-0

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– The West Alabama Tigers couldn't get the finishing touch on their offensive sets resulting in a 2-0 loss to the Mississippi College Choctaws in the first Gulf South Conference Women's Soccer match of the 2018 season for both squads Friday night in Tiger Stadium.

"I thought this was a full-on battle," said Head coach Graeme Orr. "We created a couple of good chances and failed to execute them and unfortunately in soccer if you don't good teams will punish you."

UWA and MC were both even on shots at 15 each and shots on goal at eight each, but a penalty kick by Jess Davenport at the 44:09 mark and a goal by Lauren Smith with an assist by Katie Taylor at the 59:43 mark proved to be enough to propel the Choctaws to victory.

Both teams were nearly even in fouls as well with UWA committing one more with eight compared to the seven for Mississippi College.

Jenni Aarniva finished with six saves in the outing while Alina Kosunen went 2-for-2 with shots on goal.

West Alabama (2-2-1) returns to action Sunday in Tiger Stadium against Delta State with the match scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in Livingston, Ala. Links to live stats and Tiger Vision Live Video will be available on uwaathletics.com.

"Sunday will be another challenge and I'm sure we will respond," said Orr.
