Argos Cruise to 74-44 Win over Tigers

PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida sped out to a 23-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back on the way to defeating West Alabama, 74-44, in Gulf South Conference women's basketball Thursday at the UWF Field House.
 
West Florida led by as many as 41 points in the fourth quarter on the way to improving its record to 16-4 overall, 10-3 in league play. The Argonauts have won six straight games and improved to 9-1 at home.
 
West Alabama is 8-12 and 5-8. The Tigers are 3-8 on the road and have lost six of the last seven games.
 
UWA guard Morgan Sams scored the first points of the game on a jump shot at the 9:48 mark of the first quarter. West Alabama did not score again in the period as West Florida ran off 25 straight to give the Argos a 25-2 lead after 10 minutes.
 
West Alabama rallied to play the Argonauts to within two points in the second quarter, but still trailed 39-14 at the half. The Tigers missed 20 field goal attempts in the first half, making six, but rallied in the second half to shoot 41 percent (12-of-29).
 
The Argonauts outrebounded UWA 29-12 in the first half and stretched that to a 51-25 final advantage. Danielle Norquest collected a game-high nine boards for the Argonauts.
 
West Florida stretched its lead to 61-24 after three quarters with a 22-10 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half. West Alabama won the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late.
 
The Tigers avoided tying the lowest scoring regular-season output over the last five seasons with a Latangellia Walker layup with 21 seconds left to play.
 
Led by Belle Bistrow with 17 points, four Argonauts scored in double figures. Toni Brewer scored 16 and grabbed eight rebounds. Halee Nieman and Fanny Hulmi chipped in 10 each for UWF.
 
Tazsa Garrett-Hammett led West Alabama with 13 points and five rebounds. Elaine Field scored 11 for the Tigers.
 
West Alabama remains on the road, playing at Montevallo Saturday. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m. West Florida has the weekend off before playing at Auburn-Montgomery on Monday.
