Tigers Sweep Blazers for First GSC Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – It may be "spooky season," but ghosts of the past did not come back to haunt the University of West Alabama Volleyball team today as the Tigers defeated the Valdosta State Blazers in straight sets to earn their first Gulf South Conference victory of the season Sunday afternoon in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.

UWA improves to 6-14 on the season and 1-6 in the GSC. VSU falls to 11-9 and 3-4 against league competition.

"It was great to earn a win today. A lot of pieces fell in place today, and we were able to play the way that we have intended to play up until this point," said Head coach Hilary Lobenstein. "Our defense did great things, and our offense got everyone on the board."

The Tigers won the first set 25-20, the second 25-15 and the final game 25-17.

Jessica Akiona and Bret Luther both finished with nine kills to lead the Tigers. GSC kills leader Taylor Donato had seven kills but led the team with 14 digs. Grace Harris had 17 assists and Desiree Blount passed 14 assists.

Rebecca Johnson added 12 digs and Luther led the front line with three blocks.

As a team, the Tigers finished with a .183 hitting percentage and were led by a .368 percentage from Luther from attackers with more than 15 attempts.

Valdosta State compiled a .036 hitting percentage while Jessie Mooney led the Blazers in kills with nine. Tammy Reyes-Perez finished with 22 assists.

Next weekend the Tigers will step out of GSC play and travel to Birmingham, Alabama for the GSC/Sunshine State Conference Crossover event October 18-19.

"We look forward to next weekend's Crossover tournament, and any challenges that we may face against Sunshine State opponents," said Lobenstein.

As of this writing, opponents have not yet been set for the event.
