Argos Survive Slugfest With West Alabama

PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Alabama and West Florida combined for 1,091 total yards, with the 22nd-ranked Argonauts surviving the offensive slugfest for a 48-37 Gulf South Conference football victory over the Tigers Saturday at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
 
West Florida improves to 8-2 overall, 7-1 in GSC play. The Argos will await the decision of the regional and national committees for its assignment in the 2019 NCAA Division II Playoffs. West Alabama ends its season 6-5 and 3-5.
 
West Florida came into the game leading the GSC in points allowed at 12.7 per game and second in the league in yards allowed per game. West Alabama's 37 points is the most the Argos have allowed all season and the Tigers 547 yards was 254 more than UWF averaged allowing through the first 10 games.
 
The flip side was Argonaut quarterback Austin Reed passed for 443 yards and five touchdowns, completing 28-of-39, and West Florida amassed 544 total yards despite running 23 less plays than West Alabama. UWF averaged 8.2 yards per play to 6.2 for UWA.
 
Both teams had 11 drives, and both ended seven of those with points. The margin came in West Florida ending its seven scoring drives with touchdowns and West Alabama with four touchdowns and three Tre Jackson field goals.
 
West Alabama converted 9-of-13 on third down, while West Florida converted 10-of-12. The Tigers did not punt.
 
West Florida led 27-24 at the half, with Reed throwing touchdown passes of 27 and 17 yards to Quentin Randolph and another to Kenneth Channelle for eight yards. The Argo also scored when Jordan Jones forced Reed to fumble into the Tiger endzone on a 4-yard run, but it was recovered for a TD by teammate Samuel Antoine.
 
Jack McDaniels completed touchdowns passes of 19 yards to Christian Saulsberry and 45 yards to Tyriq Martin in the first half. Jackson drilled a 21-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter and Demetrius Battle scored from a yard out after McDaniels and Qua Boyd connected for 32 yards to set up the score.
 
McDaniels completed 30-of-44 passing attempts for a career-high 345 yards. Tyriq Martin had a career-best 11 receptions for 126 yards and Derrick Underwood led all rushers with 116 yards on 21 carries.
 
Jackson hit a 22-yard field goal in the Tigers opening drive of the second half to tie the game at 27-27 with 10:04 left in the third quarter.
 
On the next drive McDaniels and Boyd hooked up again for 32 yards to the Argonaut 3-yard line, but the Tigers failed to punch it in after Battle lost a fumble at the UWF 1-yard line. It was the Tigers' second trip inside the UWF 5-yard line in the third period with just a field goal to show.
 
Caleb Abrom returned the favor on the ensuing drive, causing and recovering a Jaden Gardner fumble at the UWF 9-yard line. Battle turned the fumble recovery into points, scoring from 2-yards out to tie the game at 34-34 with 13:50 left to play.
 
It took Reed just a minute and 24 seconds to find Randolph again, this time from 50 yards out to extend West Florida's lead to 41-34 with his fifth TD pass. Randolph finished with eight receptions for 171 yards and three TDs.
 
Jackson hit a 39-yard field goal with 6:08 left in the game to squeeze the UWF lead to 41-37, but Anthony Johnson scampered in from nine yards for the Argonauts final touchdown. Johnson led Argo runners with 44 yards on 13 carries.
 
Jones and Abrom led West Alabama with six tackles each. Jones had two tackles for loss, giving him 43 for his career and tying him for seventh all-time in GSC history.
 
Chanier Ferguson recorded 10 tackles for West Florida, while De'Mareyae Givens and Henry Montgomery both intercepted a pass.
