Tigers Defeat Statesmen 74-58, Hardy Claims another Triple-Double

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama Men's Basketball team went 33 years between triple-double performances one and two. LaJuan Hardy cut the time to four days the second to third as the guard helped the Tigers to a 74-58 victory over the Delta State Statesmen in Gulf South Conference action Tuesday night in Pruitt Hall.

UWA improves to 5-2 on the season and 1-1 in the GSC. DSU is now 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Three of the Statesmen's four losses this season have been in Pruitt Hall Gym.

"Coach (Sharpe) talked about it before the game, how much better the turkey would taste during the break with a win tonight. The offense was what we need it to look like what we've been expecting," said Associate Head coach Nick Woodruff. "We hold people to 58, we feel like we should win. We pride ourselves on defense. But the offense has to come along at some, and we did that tonight."

Hardy went for 10 points, 10 assists and 12 rebounds in the win to earn his second triple-double in three games. After struggling Saturday evening at Mississippi College, the performance was a much needed one for the team.

"We're going to lose with LJ or we're going to win with him. Tonight, he put up the stats it takes to win with him," said Woodruff. "He's got to play really well for us. He knows it and that's a big responsibility for him. He has to play 40 minutes a game and that's a lot on a 21-22-year-old."

Darron Johnson led UWA with 20 points and added two rebounds and an assist. Ricky Dunnaway turned in a solid performance in the paint with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and five rebounds.

The Tigers shot 46.2 percent (30-of-65) from the field, 31 percent (9-of-29) from the three-point line and a perfect 5-of-5 effort from the free throw line.

West Alabama's defense looked to be on the way to another historic effort, with DSU down as much as 35-9. However, the Statesmen put on a small run to end the half down 42-23 and outscored UWA in the second half 35-32, but it was not enough to overcome the rough first half in the 74-58 final mark for the home team.

DSU shot 41.2 percent (21-of-51) from the floor, 28 percent (7-of-25) from behind the arc and 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the free throw line.

Keyshaun Street scored 20 to lead the Statesmen while Anderson McCoy and Airen Brooks both scored 11 points each.

West Alabama returns to action at home in a non-conference matchup against Martin Methodist on December 5. Tipoff in Pruitt Hall Gym is set for 7 p.m. with links to live stats and live video available on uwaathletics.com.
