Men’s Soccer Season Closes with Tie to UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama Men's Soccer team saw their final shot at continuing into the postseason fade away as a late goal from Alabama Huntsville forced a scoreless overtime period that resulted in a 2-2 tie in Gulf South Conference Men's Soccer action Friday night at Charger Park.

UWA closed the season with a 4-8-4 overall record and a 2-5-4 record in the GSC. UAH moved to 6-8-3 overall and 4-4-3 in league play and has clinched a spot in the GSC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament although the Chargers aren't quite sure of seeding yet thanks to the tie.

"Unfortunately, the truth is that brings our season to an end. It's a game of fine margins and I think this season proves that," said Head coach Ross Nelson. "We have competed with some of the best teams in the country, took games right down to the wire, only to be narrowly on the wrong end of results. That tells me we are right there! We have something to build on and we will be back next season stronger than ever. I'd also like to thank our seniors for everything they have given to this program. They gave their blood, sweat and tears and have set an example for the younger players to come. I have no doubt they will be a massive success in the next chapter of their lives."

UAH scored the first goal early at 1:28 into the match off the foot of Moreno Rafa with an assist by Brayant Toro.

The Tigers responded with two straight scores, first with a goal at 51' by Kyle McLeod and then at 62' off the foot of Maxime Correia to take a 2-1 lead.

Just as it seemed UWA was coming down the home stretch with the victory, Rafa scored a second goal with an assist from Andres Rodriguez at 88:39 in regulation to send the match into overtime at 2-2. Neither team scored in the two overtime periods.

The Chargers outshot the Tigers, 20-7 but the margin was closer in shots on goal with UAH taking a slight 7-5 edge in the category.

McLeod led the UWA attack with three shots with all of them counting as SOGs. Adam Zayed and Othonn Ruy each took two shots.

William Blake (1-5-4) finished with five saves in the contest.
