Tigers Cap Historic Regular Season with Win over UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – While there's still work to be done, the University of West Alabama Women's Soccer team has a lot to be proud of already after defeating the Alabama Huntsville Chargers 3-0 Friday night in Gulf South Conference action at Charger Park.

UWA moved to 12-4-1 on the season and 10-2-1 in the GSC. The 10 wins are the most regular season wins in conference history. UAH fell to 7-10-1 on the year and 5-8-0 in league play.

"Away from soccer this year has been very challenging personally however these ladies have raised my spirits every day. It's a pleasure to coach them," said Head coach Graeme Orr. "They have enjoyed many highs this season and broken plenty of records along the way. Ten wins in a tough conference is tremendous. This is the end of regular season, but post season starts and we will be ready whoever we play Tuesday night."

Anele Komani was involved on all three goals for the Tigers. The junior midfielder scored the first at 9:40 with an assist from TeMia Pride. Later at the 75:11 mark, Megan Ongteco hit her first goal of the season to put the team up 2-0.

Pride scored with an assist from Komani in 82' to go up for the 3-0 final. The goal by Pride was her 50th career goal, making the senior from Huntsville, Alabama just the eighth player in the history of the GSC to score 50 or more goals.

"Once again, I don't think you will find a better combo of Anele Komani and Aleah Headley," said Orr. "Special mention to TeMia. I thought it was fitting she scores her 50th goal in her hometown. Some teams don't score 50 in four years so that highlights the achievement. I could mention all the players because they are all so special to me."

As a unit, UWA outshot UAH 14-6 and won the shot on goal battle 8-2. Pride led in shots and SOGs with four and three, respectively.

With two assists tonight, Komani has passed six assists and scored two goals and moved to eight in the conference in total points with 21.

While the Tigers are already guaranteed a home match in the first round of the GSC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament, the exact seed in the tournament won't be determined until tomorrow afternoon.

Since Montevallo and West Alabama tied earlier this season, secondary tiebreakers will be needed if Montevallo defeats Christian Brothers. If the Falcons win and score two or less goals or if Montevallo wins but gives up four or more, UWA will be the second seed. If Montevallo wins, score at least three and give up less than four, UWA will be the third seed. Finally, if the Falcons and CBU tie 3-3 tomorrow, the second seed will come down to a coin flip.

Regardless of which scenario takes place, the Women's Soccer team will finish with their highest seeding in program history.

As far as the first round of the GSC Tournament is concerned, the game will be on Tuesday, November 12 in Tiger Stadium. Times and opponents have not been determined, but game links will be on uwaathletics.com.
