Tigers Handle Paine 88-49 for Home Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team wrapped non-conference play for the season with a 88-49 win over the Paine College Lady Lions Wednesday night in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.

UWA moves to 5-3 on the season with the victory while the Lions are now 3-5 overall.

"It's really hard to complain after a home win like that," said Head coach Rusty Cram. "We seem to be fine with the first few players, but tonight it seemed to be a drop off when different lineups were on the floor. At this point in the season, you'd like to not lean on young players but that's where we are. They have to step up because there's no substitute for experience."

Bria Dent secured a career high 16 rebounds and scored 16 points to lead the squad in both categories. Andrea Petrovic scored 15 points thanks to a 4-of-7 effort from beyond the arc. Naelyn Rios added 13 points four rebounds, two assists and two blocks while Lauryn Lilly scored 11 and Tazsa Garrett-Hammett produced 10 points, four rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks.

Zoe Watts and Sydney Bozeman both tied for the team lead with three blocks in what was a resurgent effort from the senior Bozeman.

"Folks who haven't been around the league long don't remember what she could do before the injuries. She (Bozeman) was a shot blocker and made her presence felt out there tonight," said Cram.

UWA won the first quarter 19-8 and edged Paine in the second quarter to take a 39-27 lead to the half time locker room. From there, the Tigers won the third 24-13 and dominated the final
quarter 25-9 for the 88-49 final score.

The Tigers were dominant on the boards and outrebounded Paine College 55-31.

If there was a place for concern for West Alabama it was turnovers as the home team committed 24 turnovers compared to 12 for the Lady Lions. On the flip side, Paine turned the UWA mistakes into 24 points while the Tigers scored 19 points of PC mistakes.

As a unit, the Tigers shot 54.4 percent (31-of-57) from the floor, 45 percent (9-of-20) from the three and 58.6 percent (17-of-29) from the free throw line.

Keondra Archie was the only Lady Lion in double figures with 10 points.

UWA limited Paine to 26 percent (19-of-73) in field goals, 15 percent (3-of-20) from behind the arc and 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from the free throw line.

With the nonconference slate behind the squad, West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference competition December 16 at Shorter. Tipoff in Rome, Georgia is set for 4:30 p.m. central. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 104.9.
