Softball Sweeps Final Day of UAH Charger Chillout

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.– The West Alabama Tigers concluded a spectacular run through the UAH Charger Chillout with a doubleheader sweep at the Metro Kiwanis Sportsplex Sunday afternoon.

UWA improved to 6-5 on the season thanks to a 5-1 effort on the weekend.

The Tigers started the day with a 3-2 win over Kentucky Wesleyan College.

Scoring didn't commence until the top of the fourth when Mckinley Parris doubled to left center to score Hayes Fulford. Then in the sixth, Alli Craft hit an RBI single to left center to bring in Shay Shepherd who was running for Kacy Noland which put UWA up 2-0

KWC responded in the bottom of the sixth with two runs to tie the ball game.

However, Fulford continued her hot start to the 2019 season with an RBI single to bring in Kailey Hunt to give the Tigers the 3-2 winning margin.

Nora Keehn (2-3) earned the win in relief and pitched 3.2 innings with a strikeout along with three hits and two earned runs. Kat Burks started the game and went 3.1 innings with two strikeouts and two hits allowed.

The day's second game was a slugfest between the Tigers and the West Liberty Hilltoppers where West Alabama came out on top 7-5.

UWA found the scoreboard early while in the top of the first Parris singled to right field to bring in Kendall Johnson. Thanks to the combination of a hit to center field by Jenna Goldsmith and a subsequent error by the center fielder, Parris and Fulford came around to score. Hunt singled to center field which allowed Goldsmith and Craft to cross the plate and UWA took an early 5-0 lead.

The next two runs belonged to WLU with the one coming in the bottom of the first and the next coming in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2.

Then in the sixth, UWA pushed two more runs across thanks to an RBI single by Goldsmith to bring in a pinch-running Lee Lee Parker and then an RBI single from Kierra Hague to bring in Goldsmith. This put the Tigers up 7-2.

West Liberty put together one more rally with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap to 7-5. The Hilltoppers even had a runner on first in the bottom of the seventh, but Carleigh Mills sat down the next three batters to shut the door on WLU.

Noland (2-1) earned the win in two innings of work with only a run and four hits allowed. Mills gained her first save of the season with 1.1 innings of work and two strikeouts against the five batters she faced.

Goldsmith finished the day 3-for-7 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Craft turned in a 3-for-6 effort on the day with a walk and an RBI.

West Alabama returns to Livingston for their home opener in the newly renovated UWA Softball Complex Feb. 15-16. UWA will host Auburn-Montgomery in the Gulf South Conference opening series for both teams. First pitch for the weekend is set for 4 p.m. Friday.
