UWA and AUM Split GSC Opening Doubleheader

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– The West Alabama Tigers and Auburn Montgomery Warhawks split the first day of their Gulf South Conference Softball opening weekend series Friday at the newly renovated UWA Softball Complex. UWA took the first game 5-1 and AUM won game two 7-0.
 
Before games were played, UWA Softball dedicated the Nikka Campora "Victors Walk" in front of a jampacked crowd. Nikka, daughter of Steve and Gayle Campora, tragically passed away in Jan. 2017 due to heart valve complications.
 
Game One
 
Turning Point 
Kendall Johnson laid down a bunt and thanks to an error by AUM's third baseman, allowed Kacy Noland to score and Johnson to come all the around to score as well to put UWA 2-1 in the bottom of the first and the Tigers never looked back.
 
Highlights from the Box Score
Nicole Buccieri finished the first game 2-for-3 and belted her first home run of the season to put UWA up 4-1 in the fourth.
Noland also went 2-3 with a run scored.
Nora Keehn (3-2) struck out six batters while pitching a complete game.
 
Tiger Scoring Plays
Johnson's hit a bunt single and a throwing error scored her and Noland to put UWA up 2-1 at the end of the first.
Buccieri homered to left field, bringing in Jenna Goldsmith. Tigers go up 4-1.
Mackenzie Parris sacrificed to second base. Lee Lee Parker scored to put UWA up 5-1 for the final.
 
Game Two
 
Turning Point
AUM scored three runs in the first and four more in the second to take a commanding 7-0 lead which stood for the final.
 
Highlights from the Box Score 
AUM's Michaelyn Foster pitched a no-hitter and only allowed three base runners thanks to two walks and a hit-by-pitch. She only struck out one batter and forced 17 groundouts.
Carleigh Mills pitched 5.2 innings in relief and struck out four batters with three hits and no earned runs.

West Alabama and Auburn Montgomery will meet in the rubber match of the series tomorrow at the UWA Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
