Tiger Men Down Alabama State in Tennis Exhibition

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In an exhibition match at NCAA Division I Alabama State on Monday, the University of West Alabama men's tennis team defeated defending Southwestern Athletic Conference Champion Alabama State, 4-3, at Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
 
"This is a good win for us against a program that won a Division I conference last season," head coach Jeff Beaman said. "It's good to play well enough to beat someone who competed at the national level a year ago."
 
Ilia Dehodiuk, Ilari Vesanen and Henrik Sinkko won as the Tigers split the singles matches. Dehodiuk and Sinkko, as well as Vesanen and Erik Nordblom won at No. 2 and 3 doubles, respectively, to give the Tigers what turned out to be the deciding doubles point.
 
Dehodiuk defeated Carl-Louis Luckmann 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at Singles No. 2. Vesanen defeated Juan Rodriguez 6-2, 6-1 at singles No. 5, while Sinkko was winner at singles No. 6, beating Alejo Calvis 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
 
The Tigers have a narrow window to rest and recover, hosting Marion Military at the Vaughan Tennis Complex adjacent to the UWA Student Union Building on Tuesday. First serve is set for 3 p.m. Admission is free.
