Late Rally Forces OT, Tigers win 80-76 over UAH

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– The West Alabama Tigers trailed by five with just over a minute to go, but the "cardiac cats" found a way one more time to rally, force overtime and then grabbed a critical 80-76 victory over the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers Thursday night in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium in Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball action.

UWA moves to 17-5 overall and 12-3 in the GSC. The eighth straight win clinches a berth in the GSC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament for the Tigers. UAH falls to 16-6 and 9-5 in the conference.

"I guess this is just who we are and the way it's going to be this year. Credit to our guys because we tickled to death for overtime," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "There was a stretch there at the end of regulation where we were struggling, but we found a way to get it to overtime and we had some juice going into overtime."

The Tigers played in front of a jampacked crowd in Pruitt Hall who were on hand to witness the clash of two titans of the GSC.

"We've talked about this before, but I don't think there's a team in the league that loves coming to Livingston to play especially if we get this gym full," said Sharpe. "It can be intimidating, it can be very uncomfortable for opponents. We'd like to thank everyone who came tonight, and they got good entertainment and got their money's worth."

LaJuan Hardy led in scoring with 21 points to along with five rebounds and four assists. Ricky Dunnaway finished with a double-double going for 18 points and 10 rebounds with the addition of a steal and a block.

"Huntsville does a good job keeping it out of the post and we felt like if we could get it in there Ricky would have an advantage with size and weight to get good looks," said Sharpe. "It's not just Rick, it's a credit to our guards for feeding him and giving him the ball. You need someone in the paint that can score the basketball."

Josh Fleming scored 12 and DeAndre Harper also added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Seth Swalve led UAH with 21 points while Sam Orf scored 18.

With the win, the Tigers sweep the season series with Alabama-Huntsville which may play a role in tiebreakers down the stretch.

West Alabama returns to action Saturday afternoon against the Lee Flames, who UWA defeated on a Hardy three-pointer 70-68 as time expired on Jan. 19 in Cleveland, Tenn.

Tipoff in the GSC matchup is set for 4 p.m. in Livingston, Alabama.
