Tigers Shine in Opening Day Sweep in Charger Chillout

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.– The West Alabama Tigers are off to a tremendous start with a doubleheader sweep during the first day of the 2019 UAH Charger Chillout hosted by Alabama-Huntsville at the Metro Kiwanis Sportsplex.

The Tigers started the day with a win over Bellarmine using a three-run fifth inning to lift UWA to a 4-1 victory.

In that fifth inning, Hayes Fulford singled to knock in Kendall Johnson and Kailey Hunt. While Fulford was eventually called out at second, she provided enough distraction to allow Kacy Noland to score as well to go up 4-1.

UWA's first run came in the bottom of the first when Chrissy Tubbs scored from second base on an RBI single from Noland. Tubbs led off the game with a single and then stole second to setup the scoring play.

Rachel Ayer knocked in the lone run for Bellarmine in the top of the first with an RBI single to score Sabrina Fussenegger.

Noland (1-1) went the distance against Bellarmine with three strikeouts while surrendering five hits and the one earned run.

West Alabama did not slow up in the second game of the day and shutout Ohio Dominican 4-0.

Nora Keehn (1-1) went the distance against ODU with five strikeouts and only two hits allowed.

UWA scored two runs in two separate innings starting in the bottom of the second where Lee Lee Parker scored on a throwing error by the catcher trying to catch Alli Craft stealing second base. Jenna Goldsmith promptly singled to right field to bring in Craft.

Then in the fourth, Goldsmith and Shay Shepherd scored thanks to a two RBI single from Kierra Hague in her lone at-bat of the day. Shepherd was on base pinch running for Craft who reached on a walk and Goldsmith used a base hit to reach and move Shepherd to second.

Noland finished the day 4-for-6 with an RBI. Fulford had herself a day at the plate and went 3-for-6 at the plate with two RBIs and two stolen bases. Parker, Craft, Goldsmith, Tubbs and Chelsea Lobitos all stole a base.

UWA (3-4) returns to action tomorrow at 11 a.m. against Georgia College which will be followed by a matchup against #13 Young Harris College at 3 p.m.
