Tigers Split in Second Day of Charger Chillout

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.– The West Alabama Softball team battled hard during the second day of the UAH Charger Chillout and finished with a split against quality competition at the Metro Kiwanis Sportsplex.

UWA saw an early lead go by the wayside but hung tough to defeat the Georgia College Bobcats 8-7 in extra innings.

West Alabama took an early lead in the bottom of the first where Craft reached on a bases loaded error by the shortstop allowing Kendall Johnson to score. Then in the third, Hayes reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and Johnson scored once more. Craft followed with a single to right field to bring in Fulford to put UWA up 3-0.

Georgia College scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a Tiger error to cut it to 3-2.

However, in the bottom of the fifth Mckenzie Parris hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Johnson for her third run in the game. This coupled with a single from Craft to bring in Kacy Noland put UWA 5-2.

Ariel Edenfield doubled in the sixth to bring in two runs for the Bobcats to cut the lead to 5-4.

West Alabama pushed the lead to 7-4 with a single by Noland to score Haylie Best followed by a Fulford sacrifice to bring in Lee Lee Parker.

The pesky Bobcats didn't go quietly with three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the contest thanks from a triple from Caroline Snider to bring in two while Snider herself was scored on a single from Haley Howell to force extra innings.

In the eighth, Fulford put the game to bed with a single through the right side to bring in Johnson for her fourth run in the game to give UWA the 8-7 win.

Carleigh Mills (2-0) picks up the win in 1.2 innings of work with a strike out. Noland started in the circle and pitched 5.2 innings with four hits and four runs allowed. Kamree Lay pitched two-thirds of an inning with two strikeouts, three hits and three runs allowed.

The second game didn't go the way of the Tigers, however UWA hang tough with #13 Young Harris Mountain Lions and suffered a 3-2 defeat.

Fulford got the West Alabama on the board early with a bunt single to bring in Johnson in the top for first.

However, Young Harris responded with a run in the bottom of the first and then another in the second to go up 2-1.

In the fifth, Noland singled to score Kierra Hague to tie the game 2-2. Young Harris scored a run in the bottom of the same inning to grab the 3-2 final advantage.

Nora Keehn (1-2) pitched all six defensive innings and threw two strikeouts while allowing six hits and three earned runs.

Kendall Johnson finished the day with five runs scored and a stolen bases while Hayes Fulford went 2-for-6 with four RBIs and a run scored.
