Elders, Rathke Pitch Tigers to Saturday Split, Series Win

AMERICUS, Ga. Tanner Elders allowed just one run over 7.2 innings and Nick Rathke worked a perfect ninth inning for his first save as West Alabama defeated Georgia Southwestern, 4-3, in the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader at Hurricane Stadium. GSW won the opener, 4-2.

The split gave West Alabama the series win over the Hurricanes and leaves the Tigers 4-2 after opening the season with six straight road games. Georgia Southwestern is 3-4.

"To win another road series is good," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "We are still making little mistakes that don't necessarily show up in the box score. Hopefully we can put it together and keep getting better each week."

Elders (2-0) carried a shutout into the eighth inning of the second game before giving way to relievers Nathan Nicolosi and Landon Davis, who allowed a walk and an inside the park home run to pull GSW to within a run of the Tigers.

Elders allowed six hits while striking out six and walking one. Rathke sat down three straight in the bottom of the ninth for the save. GSW starter Sage Holderfield (0-2) took the loss.

"I thought we pitched well," Rundles said. "Rathke looked great and Tanner did a great job getting us deep in the game and throwing strikes. Kolby (Crowley) also threw well but had one mistake in the first game that hurt him."

Tucker Smith (2-0) went the distance for Georgia Southwestern to earn the win the opener, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out two. Kolby Crowley (0-2) absorbed the loss for UWA, giving up three runs on 10 hits.

Austin Moffett and Gavin Rogers drove in a pair of runs in the second game. Moffett and Jaylon Keys had two hits each. JD Roberts had three hits for the Tigers in the opener. Trevor Smeeton got two hits in the first game but saw his hitting streak end at five games in the nightcap.

Jonathan Martin had five hits for the Hurricanes over the two games, including his first home run of the year in game one. Hunter Foster also had five hits in the doubleheader, including the inside the park homer in game two.

West Alabama closes an eight-game road swing to open the season with a doubleheader at Point (Ga.) University on Tuesday. Georgia Southwestern is host to Auburn-Montgomery Tuesday.
