ENNIS, Texas – West Alabama battled frigid weather and 23rd-ranked St. Edward's and defeated both in men's tennis Saturday to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Tigers endured 30-degree temperatures to notch a 5-2 win over the Hilltoppers (1-2).
West Alabama took control early, winning all three doubles courts before winning four of six in singles play.
Julius Kaverinen and Linus Holthey defeated Luis Diaz and Anish Sriniketh 6-5 (7-4) in No. 1 doubles, while Henrik Sinkko and Ilia Dehodiuk beat Mateus de Col and Chase Morehouse 6-3 at No. 2. Erik Nordblom and Ilari Vesanen made it a clean sweep with a 6-1 victory over Nico Mercado and Zac Robinson at No. 3.
Kaverinen, , Vesanen, Holthey and Nordblom were all singles winners, with all but Holthey winning in straight sets.
"It was another cold Texas day, but a good win against a strong St. Edwards team," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "We get to face a very talented OBU team first thing in the morning."
West Alabama concludes its three-match Texas swing by playing Ouachita Baptist at 9 a.m. Sunday.
