Tigers Swept in GSC Doubleheader at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo build big leads and made them stand against late rallies on the way to sweeping West Alabama in a Gulf South Conference baseball doubleheader Sunday at Kermit A. Johnson Field.

The Falcons won game one, 9-6, and game two, 10-4, to improve to 9-12 overall, 6-5 in GSC play. West Alabama dipped to 9-8 and 3-6. The third game of the series is set for noon Monday.

The Falcons built a 5-0 lead in game one before the Tigers got a solo home run from Jake Hartman, his third of the year, in the top of the sixth. Montevallo answered Hartman's shot with a solo homer from Jason Cryar, his sixth, in the bottom of the sixth.

UM added two more in the eighth before West Alabama scored four in the top of the ninth on five hits, but it was too little too late.

The Falcons jumped to a 10-0 lead in game two. Again, West Alabama rallied to score four in the final inning, but again, the hill proved too high to climb.

Montevallo got two home runs from Sebastian Samuels, a solo shot in the second and a three-run bomb in the third to pull away from the Tigers. Sam Stewart also had a solo homer in the second inning for the Falcons in game two. Samuels two long balls were his third and fourth of the season. Stewart's was his first.

Starters for both teams figured in the pitching decisions for both teams.

Chrit Rudkin (3-2) was the game one winner and Brady Schnarr (2-3) earned the win in game two. Rudkin allowed 11 hits, but just two earned runs over seven innings and struck out six. Schnarr allowed eight hits and four runs while striking out seven in 6.1 innings pitched.

Cole Waites (2-2) was charged with the game one loss, allowing six hits and five earned runs while walking four and striking out eight in four innings. Tanner Elders (2-3) was touched for 10 hits and seven earned runs while striking out four in four innings.

Taylor Clemmons collected five hits and drove in two runs in the doubleheader for West Alabama. JD Roberts had four hits in the two games and drove in two runs, while Gavin Rogers was 4-for-5 with two RBI in the first game. Wyatt Ball combined for three hits in the twinbill and Hartman drove in three runs.

Samuels and Khari Anderson both had five hits in the two games for Montevallo, with Samuels driving in five runs. Cryar finished the day 4-for-7 with five RBI. Max Garvey went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in the first game for the Falcons.
