Hitting Dazzles as Tigers Sweep Shorter

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– Scoring runs was not an issue for the West Alabama Softball team today as UWA scored in 10 of 13 innings today during a Gulf South Conference doubleheader sweep over the Shorter Hawks at the UWA Softball Complex.

The Tigers improved to 14-10 and 8-5 in the GSC while Shorter fell to 13-14 and 6-9 in league play.

UWA's offense came out strong to start the day with a 9-0 win in five innings.

Hayes Fulford got the Tigers on the board early with a two RBI double to right center where Kendall Johnson and Kacy Noland scored to put UWA up 2-0.

Shenanigans ensued in the bottom of the third when Johnson and Lee Lee Parker both scored on wild pitches. Grace Self notched her first RBI of the day to bring in Jenna Goldsmith, who reached on a walk, to give UWA a 5-0 lead.

West Alabama turned to the long ball in the fifth when Self hit her first collegiate homer to bring in herself and Fulford and Kylie Martin hit a two-run shot of her own to bring in Shay Shepherd and give the Tigers a 9-0 advantage and invoke the run rule to wrap the game in five innings.

Nora Keehn (8-4) pitched all five innings of game one with six strikeouts and six hits allowed.

The Hawks started quickly in game two in the top of the first with a triple by Tiffany Holland putting her in scoring position and Dani Lukas brought her in with a single. Alexis Sewell later doubled to bring in Lukas.

Alli Craft responded with her first hit of the day, an RBI double to score Noland. Fulford brought in Craft with a hit to left field and tied the game 2-2 after the first inning.

UWA came right back in the second with a double by Noland that allowed Haylie Best to score and put UWA up 3-2.

Shorter answered back with a single from Taylor Martin to score Holland to even the score 3-3 in the third.

Fulford hit her first homer of the season in the bottom of the third to put UWA up 4-3.

The lead did not last long however as Maddie Hunt singled in Sydney Poston in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4.

Fulford came back in the bottom of the fourth with a two-RBI double to put UWA up 6-4.

But again, Shorter came right back with Lukas scoring on a passed ball and Taylor Martin scoring on an error to tie the game once more at 6-6 in the fifth.

West Alabama took the lead once in for all in the sixth when Fulford finished her five RBI performance with a sacrifice fly to right to score Johnson for the 7-6 win.

Kamree Lay (1-2) earned the win by virtue of being the pitcher in when UWA took the final lead. She pitched two innings, struck out three batters with two hits allowed. Keehn started the game and got through two outs with three hits and two earned runs. Kat Burks went 3.1 innings with three strikeouts alongside four hits and two runs allowed. Carleigh Mills pitched an inning with a strikeout, three hits and a pair of runs allowed.

Fulford finished the day 5-for-7 at the plate with seven RBIs, two doubles and a homer to lead UWA.

West Alabama and Shorter meet one more time tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Livingston, Alabama for the series finale where the Tigers will be seeking the sweep.
