Shorter Spoils Softball Series Sweep

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– The West Alabama Softball team was looking for the sweep over the Shorter Hawks, but it was not to be as the Tigers fell 7-3 Sunday afternoon in Gulf South Conference action at the UWA Softball Complex.

UWA falls to 14-11 and 8-6 in the GSC while Shorter improves to 14-14 and 7-9 in league play.

The Hawks scored a run in the first and two runs in the second to take an early 3-0 lead.

The Tigers scored their first run in the bottom of the third when Hayes Fulford recorded RBI number eight on the weekend with a double as Alli Craft scored the run to close the gap to 3-1.

However, Shorter responded in a big way using singles from Sydney Poston to bring in Maddie Hunt and from Dani Lukas to bring in Tiffany Holland. Poston later scored on a wild pitch to put the Hawks up 6-1 in top of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, Kierra Hague smashed her first homer of the season to bring in Lee Lee Parker to close the gap to 6-3.

However, Shorter's Hunt scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to give Shorter the 7-3 final advantage.

UWA had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth but couldn't move any runner across to close the gap. In all, the Tigers left 11 runners on base compared to nine for Shorter.

Kacy Noland (8-6) takes the loss after recording an out and allowing two hits and a run. Nora Keehn pitched 2.2 innings in relief with two strikeouts but allowed eight hits and five earned runs. Kat Burks finished the game and went four innings with three strikeouts with only two hits and an earned run given up.

West Alabama returns to action Tuesday against non-conference opponent Spring Hill College. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex. Live stats and live video will be available on uwaathletics.com.
