St. Mary’s Upsets No. 12 UWA

PENSACOLA, Fla. – St. Mary's of Texas fell behind No. 12 West Alabama 3-1 before rallying to upset the Tigers, 4-3, in men's tennis Friday at the Carson Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of West Florida.
 
The loss was the first for West Alabama in six matches on neutral courts, snapping a five-match winning streak and dropping the Tigers to 10-3. St. Mary's improved to 3-10.
 
"We played great doubles and came out of the gate fast in singles, going up 3-1 and winning the first set in two matches," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said, "but then we started spring break a touch early against a team that fought very hard until the end.
 
"We had match point in the deciding match, but it did not go our way," Beaman said. "We have to use this match to learn and get better towards our end goal of conference and regionals."
 
Julius Kaverinen and Linus Holthey won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Henrik Sinkko and Ilari Vesanen won 6-2 on the No. 2 doubles court.
 
Vesanen and Ilia Dehoduik picked up wins at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, to stretch the West Alabama lead to 3-1 before the bottom fell out. St. Mary's proceeded to win the remainder of the singles to win the match.
 
The Tigers travel to No. 36 Valdosta State on March 30 and will hang around to play No. 40 Embry-Riddle on March 31. St. Mary's plays West Florida Saturday.
