Tigers Sweep Doubleheader From Saint Leo

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama ensured itself of a baseball series win over Saint Leo by sweeping a doubleheader from the Lions Saturday at Tartt Field. The Tigers won the first game, 12-11, and the second game, 3-1.

West Alabama has put together a modest three-game win streak and is 13-11 overall, 5-5 at home. Saint Leo lost for the fifth straight game and is 14-12. The Lions are 1-7 on the road.

The two games couldn't have been more different. UWA and SLU combined 23 runs and 26 hits in the opener, with the Tigers winning on a walk-off sacrifice fly from Jaylon Keys. The two teams combined for nine hits in game two and every West Alabama run was unearned.

Nick Rathke (2-0) worked the final inning to nab the win in game one, allowing no hits or runs while walking two. Joey Antonopoulos (2-2) took the loss, allowing two hits and an unearned run in two-thirds of an inning.

West Alabama starter Cole Waites (3-2) struck out a season-high 13, allowing four hits and a run over six innings for the win in game two. Rathke struck out two in a perfect final inning for his fourth save. McCabe Sargent (2-3) allowed four hits and three unearned runs in 4.2 innings for the loss.

Gavin Rogers reached base in all eight plate appearances for West Alabama. He homered twice in game one, his second and third of the year, adding a pair of singles and driving in six runs. He walked in his other four plate appearances in the twinbill, twice intentionally.

Rogers first homer was a grand slam, staking the Tigers to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Saint Leo would score five in the third to take the lead before Rogers' solo homer tied it in the bottom of the inning.

West Alabama scored two in the fifth and four more in the sixth before walking off with the win in the ninth. SLU pushed across three in the fourth, two in the seventh and one run in the eighth to tie the game at 11-11.

Saint Leo scored a run in the top of the first in game two but wouldn't cross the plate again. West Alabama used three Lion errors and two hits to plate three runs in the fifth. The Lions committed eight errors in the two games.
