Tigers Split Doubleheader with CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn.– Inconsistent offense plagued the West Alabama Softball team all day as the Tigers and the Christian Brothers Lady Bucs battled to doubleheader split in a non-conference matchup between the two Gulf South Conference schools.

UWA finishes the day 18-13 while Christian Brothers moves to 7-27.

The Tigers left 16 total runners on base during the doubleheader (seven in game one, nine in game two).

CBU scored first on a double steal where Ashley Dyer scored. Marquisha Sanders then crossed the plate as Sierra Anderson reached on a fielder's choice to put the Lady Bucs up 2-0 after the first.

In the top of the second, Kendall Johnson singled to the pitcher and allowed Shay Shepherd to come around to score and cut the lead to 2-1.

Kierra Hague got a hit to shallow right field which allowed Kailey Hunt to score all the way from second base and tie the game 2-2 in the fifth.

Chrissy Tubbs broke the tie in the eighth inning with a single to right center to bring in Hague who was on second thanks to the international tie breaker in the non-conference game. Nicole Buccieri smashed a double to center to bring in Tubbs and put UWA up 4-2 for the final.

In game two, Lady Bucs struck first again with a single through the left side by Mackenzie Puckett to bring in Dyer.

Tigers responded with a triple by Lee Lee Parker to bring in Hunt and tie the contest 1-1 in the second.

However, errors on consecutive plays helped Kendall Westbrooks score and then a wild pitch let Julia Schassburger score and put Christian Brothers up 3-1 after two innings.

In the sixth, Kaitlin Bowers scored on a wild pitch and then Macy Cummings knocked in two runs on a single to right to put CBU up 6-1.

Buccieri singled to right to let Hague score in the seventh, but that's as close as the Tigers got and lost 6-2.

Nora Keehn (10-4) pitched all eight innings with strike outs along with five hits and two earned runs in the first game. Kat Burks got the start in game two and pitched two innings with three strikeouts and an earned run. Carleigh Mills pitched two innings with a strikeout and a hit allowed while Kamree Lay also pitched two innings with two strikeouts with three hits and three earned runs allowed.
