Union Sweeps Tiger Softball in GSC Doubleheader

JACKSON, Tenn.– The West Alabama Softball team lead early in both games, but the Union Bulldogs powered back in both games to earn a Gulf South Conference Doubleheader sweep Saturday at Fesmire Field with a 5-3 win in the first game and a 10-8 win in game two.
 
UWA falls to 18-15 overall and 8-8 in the conference. Union improves to 24-14 and 11-6 in league play.
 
Scoring was quiet until the fourth when Nicole Buccieri doubled to right center which allowed Alli Craft to score from first base. Grace Self got a hit to left center to bring in Chrissy Tubbs, who pinch ran for Buccieri to put UWA up 2-0. 
 
In the fifth, Craft got an RBI of her own with a blooper to left as Kacy Noland came around to score and put UWA up 3-0.
 
Union got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth with a triple by Harley Bartholomew helped Gabby Morris score and cut the lead to 3-1.
 
In the sixth for the Lady Bulldogs, Kaitlyn Kelley scored as Sarah Smith reached on an error and then tied the game with an RBI single from Peyton Mathis. Smith later scored as pinch hitter Sam McDaniel reached on a fielder's choice. Morris scored as Bartholomew reached on a fielder's choice to give Union a late 5-3 lead which held as the final in game one.
 
Noland got the party started early in game two with a leadoff homer over center to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
 
Union responded in the bottom of the first when Bartholomew scored as Kelley reached on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 1-1.
 
Morris homered to lead off the bottom of the second, Mathis came around to score after a double from Alyssa Ward, Hayley Barnette drew a bases loaded walk to score Kristen Pickens and the Bulldogs took a 4-1 lead.
 
In the third, Craft hit a sacrifice fly to left which allowed Noland to come home and cut the lead to 4-2.
 
The Lady Bulldogs responded with a two-run homer from Pickens to go up 6-2 in the bottom of the third.
 
Kierra Hague smoked a single to right field with the bases loaded to allow Jenna Goldsmith to score from third to cut the lead to 6-3 in the fourth.
 
Then in the fifth, Tubbs came around to score thanks to a throwing error. Kailey Hunt got a single down the right side to bring around Self to close the gap to 6-5 in favor of Union. 
 
Union responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth when Mathis scored on a passed ball followed by a two-run homer from Kelley and a solo shot from Barnette to go up 10-5.
 
Self smacked a single to center and Lee Lee Parker scored from second base. Goldsmith had her fly ball dropped by the centerfielder which allowed Paige Dill and Tubbs to score and cut the lead to 10-8, but the rally would end their as Union came away with the win.
Nora Keehn (10-5) pitched all six innings for the Tigers in game one with four strikeouts as well as nine hits allowed and three earned runs. 
 
Kat Burks (1-2) started and received the loss in 1.2 innings pitched with two strikeouts and three earned runs. Carleigh Mills pitched an inning of work with a pair of strikeouts, two earned runs and a hit allowed. Kamree Lay went 2.2 innings and struck out four batters with five hits and four earned runs allowed. Keehn pitched the final three outs and sat down all three batters she faced.
 
West Alabama and Union will wrap the series tomorrow where the Tigers will try to salvage a win. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
