Union Ends UWA Season in GSC Tournament First Round

JACKSON, Tenn. – Jada Smith scored 21 points to lead No. 9 Union to a 77-60 win over West Alabama in the opening round of the 2019 VisitSpaceCoast.com GSC Women's Basketball Tournament Tuesday at the Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
 
The win improved the Lady Bulldogs to 27-2. West Alabama ends its season with an 11-18 record.
 
West Alabama managed to convert just 33 percent from the floor (21-of-62), while Union made 44 percent (26-for-58). Neither team shot well from behind the three-point line, with UWA making just 7-of-22 and Union 7-of-25.
 
West Alabama scored the opening bucket of the game, but Union led for all but 17 seconds of the contest. The Lady Bulldogs largest lead was 26 points with 7:54 left to play.
 
Smith made 6-of-8 from the floor and 8-of-13 free throw attempts for her game-high point totals. Morgan Martin chipped in 16 points, while Emily Beard and Jada Perkins added 13 and 12 points, respectively. Jada Smith and Deja Graves collected a game-high nine rebounds each.
 
Elaine Field led West Alabama scorers with 14 points. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett was the only other Tiger in double figures with 10. Garrett-Hammett and Bria Dent led UWA rebounders with six each.
 
Union advances to the semi-finals of the tournament, facing Valdosta State Saturday at noon at the Pete Hannah Center in Birmingham. West Georgia and Lee will meet in the other semi-final game at 2:15 p.m.
