Tiger Tennis Executes Sweep of Mississippi College

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Both the University of West Alabama men's and women's tennis teams made short work of Mississippi College Wednesday at the Vaughan Tennis Complex with both teams winning 6-1.

The 23rd ranked UWA men improved to 6-2 overall, 1-1 in Gulf South Conference play. The Tiger women are 3-3 and 2-0. The Choctaw men are 2-5 overall, 2-1 in league play. The MC women are 4-3 and 2-1.

"The women had a battle against a very strong team, and I am very proud of how they performed," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "This easily could have been a loss and the end score does not represent how close each match was."

"The men took care of business," Beaman said. "We talked about consistent effort from everybody and right from the start and we achieved this in most spots."

West Alabama claimed five women's singles matches with wins from Sarah Manseri, Haina Franco, Georgina Salom, Andrea Tomassone and Liliana Araucz. Manseri and Araucz were winners at No. 2 doubles, while Daryna Hukasian and Franco claimed the No. 3 doubles court.

The Tiger men matched the women by winning the doubles point and then five of six singles matches. Julius Kaverinen, Ilari Vesanen, Linus Holthey, Erik Nordblom and Noah Johansen all won in straight sets. Kaverinen and Holthey took No. 1 doubles, while Nordblom and Vesanen were winners at No. 3.

The UWA women are scheduled to meet Nova Southeastern in a neutral court match in Pensacola, Florida on Saturday. The men remain in GSC play at Montevallo Tuesday.
