Timely Hitting Lifts Tigers to DH Sweep over UM

MONTEVALLO, Ala.– The West Alabama Tigers found runs when they needed them most to come away with a doubleheader sweep over the Montevallo Falcons Friday evening at Orr Park in Gulf South Conference Softball action.
 
With the wins, UWA improves to 12-9 overall and 6-4 in the GSC. Montevallo falls to 13-11 and 4-7 in league play.
 
The Falcons got on the board early when Caroline Pope scored as Alexis Cortez reached on an error in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead.
 
UWA finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth with an Alli Craft single to second base to bring in Kacy Noland. In the very next at-bat, Nicole Buccieri smacked a homer over left field to bring in Kendall Johnson and Craft. Jenna Goldsmith smashed a two-run triple to right field as Olivia Dunlap and Hayes Fulford scored to put the Tigers up 6-1.
 
Montevallo added a second run with a sacrifice fly by Haley Barnette to score Mariel Bertossi and cut the UWA lead to 6-2, which held as the final score.
 
Craft scored the first run of game two after advancing to third, unintentionally knocking the ball out of the fielder's glove and then went home. Fulford followed with an RBI single to center field which scored Buccieri to put UWA up 2-0.
 
The Falcons responded with an RBI single from Bertossi and a two-run home run from Barnette to put Montevallo up 3-2.
 
Noland helped the Tigers retake the lead with a double to bring in Chrissy Tubbs and Dunlap. Craft hit a homer to left centerfield to put UWA up 6-3.
 
Montevallo added a run in the fourth with an RBI single by Brooke Ingram to make it 6-4. The Falcons later tied it in the sixth at 6-6 with 2 RBI double to left centerfield by Carlee Mullinax.
 
Dunlap doubled to centerfield to start the eighth inning and later came around to score as Tubbs had a ball dropped by the right fielder. UWA went up 8-7 and held on for the final.
 
Nora Keehn (7-4) pitched all seven innings in the game one win with a strikeout and only two hits and one earned run allowed. She also earned the win in game two in a relief appearance with two innings pitched with a strikeout and only two hits allowed. Kacy Noland started the second game and went 0.1 with three hits and three earned runs. Carleigh Mills went four innings and struck out five batters with six hits and three earned runs allowed. Kamree Lay pitched 1.2 innings with a strikeout and two hits allowed.  
 
Buccieri's homer was her third of the season and puts her RBI total to 11 RBIs. Craft is up to four home runs with a team leading 13 RBIs. Fulford moved to 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts while Dunlap went to 5-for-5 and Alli Craft moved to 3-for-3 in stolen bases so far this year.
 
West Alabama looks to sweep the series against Montevallo tomorrow with game three set for 11 a.m. tomorrow.
