Tigers Come Up Short in Back and Forth Affair with Falcons

MONTEVALLO, Ala.– The West Alabama Tigers and Montevallo Falcons battled back and forth throughout the game, but a three-run effort in the bottom of the seventh to give the Falcons the 8-7 win to avoid the Gulf South Conference series sweep Saturday at Orr Park.
 
UWA falls to 12-10 on the season and 6-5 in league play while Montevallo improves to 14-11 and 5-7 in the GSC.
 
Kacy Noland got the Tigers on the board in the second with an infield single to score Olivia Dunlap and give UWA an early 1-0 lead.
 
Montevallo responded in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly from Lady Sarah Federico to bring in Haley Barnette and tie the game at 1-1.
 
UWA retook the lead when Shay Shepherd scored on an infield single by Dunlap to go up 2-1 in the third.
 
The Falcons tied it once more in the bottom of the third with an RBI double by Brooke Ingram to even the score at 2-2.
 
In the fourth, Chrissy Tubbs scored on a throwing error by the third baseman as Noland's speed allowed her to reach on a fielders' choice and advance all the way to third. Noland later scored on a sacrifice RBI from Kierra Hague to put UWA up 4-2.
 
Grace Self added an RBI single to left which brought in Dunlap to put UWA up 5-2 in the fifth. 
 
Montevallo added a run in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Mariel Bertossi to move the score to 6-3
 
Then in the sixth, West Alabama extended the lead when a throwing error allowed Noland to score are Alli Craft to reach first safely. Nicole Buccieri hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Kailey Hunt to put UWA up 7-3.
 
Falcons responded with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth and coupled with a wild pitch brought the score to 7-5. 
 
Haley Barnette hit a solo shot to left center and Brianna Stella singled in Federico, and then Bertossi got a hit to center to bring around Annie Adamos for the walk off victory. 
 
Carleigh Mills (2-2) suffered the loss with four hits and three runs allowed in an inning of work. Nora Keehn started and pitched 4.2 innings three strikeouts while allowing six hits and three earned runs. Kamree Lay turned in an inning of work with a strikeout, four hits allowed and an earned run.

West Alabama returns home for the first time in two weeks to host the Shorter Hawks in GSC action with a Saturday doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. Saturday, March 16 and a single game the next day at 1 p.m. Links to live stats and live video will be available on uwaathletics.com.
