Tigers Fall in GSC Tournament Semifinals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.– The third seed Alabama Huntsville Chargers came out firing and rarely slowed down on a way to an upset victory over the Gulf South Conference Champion West Alabama Tigers 82-69 Saturday night to advance to the GSC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament Finals tomorrow in the Pete Hanna Center on the campus of Samford University.

UAH (24-6) finished 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the three-point line, but a buzzer beater as the first half expired by Sam Orf helped the Chargers finish 72 percent (8-of-11) in the first half.

"I think some of it was self-inflicted," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "I think our offense contributed to some of it. We're not going to beat anybody shooting 11-of-19 from three against us. It was partly them shooting the ball well and a little bit of us not executing the. Way we should that gives us a chance to win."

Despite the hot shooting from UAH, the Tigers were as close as within eight with 3:29 left. However, when UWA took away the threes UAH moved inside and still finished 50 percent (12-24) and 90 percent (18-of-20) from the free throw line.

Charles Tripp fouled out as the leading scorer with 21 points along with six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Ricky Dunnaway went for 18 points, six rebounds and two blocks. LaJuan Hardy added 15 points, five assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals.

JJ Kaplan led UAH with 31 points and eight rebounds.

With the GSC Tournament run done, the Tigers await their postseason fate and will have an answer come Sunday night as the NCAA Division II Men's Tournament field will be announced at 9:30 p.m. UWA is hoping to still be included in the number.

"Who knows, but we just want to be hopeful that we have a chance to keep playing," said Sharpe. "Hopefully we'll get in and have a chance to keep playing. This team is still changing. When we get Tripp and Ricky in there together, that's a handful for the other team to handle. We haven't really gotten to do that a whole lot. There's still a whole lot of things we'd like to tweak and do. Hopefully we'll have the chance to keep playing and improving."

West Alabama invites all fans in the area to join the team in Glen Bridges Auditorium, located outside of Wallace Hall, as the field of 64 is announced. Doors will open at 9 p.m.
