Tigers Hold Off Lee in GSC Men’s Match

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – After taking the doubles point No. 17 West Alabama held off a charge from No. 41 Lee to score a 4-3 Gulf South Conference men's tennis victory over the Flames Wednesday at the DeVos Tennis Center.
 
West Alabama is 12-4 overall, 4-2 in GSC play. Lee is 15-4 and 5-3.
 
Ranked 34th nationally in doubles, Julius Kaverinen and Linus Holthey won at No. 1 doubles, while Henrik Sinkko and Ilari Vesanen won at No. 2 and Ilia Dehodiuk and Noah Johansen at No. 3 to take the point.
 
Dehodiuk's 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles gave the Tiger a 2-0 lead before Jesus Garcia and Jake Okines defeated 64th-ranked Vesanen and 70th-ranked Kaverinen at No. 2 and 1 singles, respectively, to tie the match.
 
Holthey, ranked 53rd, took care of Daniel Prata at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win before Sinkko clinched the match for West Alabama with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Bruno Medeiros at No. 6.
 
"This was a good win over a very good Lee team," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "Now it's time for a little rest and recovery prior to a tough weekend."
 
The Tigers have a pair of GSC matches coming up this weekend, playing Christian Brothers in Columbus, Mississippi on Friday and Shorter at home on Saturday.
