Tiger Tennis Dominant on Senior Day

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Senior Day couldn't have gone any better for the West Alabama tennis program as the Tiger men and women both cruised by Shorter in Gulf South Conference matches Saturday at the Vaughan Tennis Complex.
 
After having first serve delayed for three hours to let the rain clear Sumter County, the Tiger men defeated the Hawks 6-0 and the women's team downed Shorter 7-0.
 
"I want to thank all of our seniors who have been a big part of getting both programs to where they are today," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "Several of them started with me my first year here and it has been a fun journey."
 
Ranked No. 13 in the nation, the West Alabama women remained perfect in GSC play at 8-0 and improved to 13-4 overall with its 10th straight win. Shorter fell to 3-14 and 0-10.
 
The UWA men, ranked 17th in the nation, has won nine of last 11 matches, improving to 14-4 overall and 6-2 in league play. The Hawks dropped to 2-13 and 0-9.
 
Tiger women seniors recording singles wins were Andrea Tomassone, Liliana Araucz and Katie Burrall. Araucz and Sarah Manseri won the only doubles match that was finished. The match was clinched at No. 1 singles by Daryna Hukasian defeating Melinda Chrun 6-3, 6-3.
 
Seniors picking up wins in the men's match were Julius Kaverinen, Linus Holthey and Henrik Sinkko. Ilari Vesanen teamed up with Sinkko to win No. 2 doubles 6-2. Sinkko's 6-2, 6-1 win over Benjamin Ginter at No. 3 singles clinched the match for the Tigers.
 
The Tiger women are host to Alabama Huntsville Thursday at 2 p.m. The UWA men have the week off before traveling to Auburn-Montgomery Saturday.
